Sailing from South Africa to America

Welcome in the voyage community: CAPE TOWN - ASCENSION ISLAND - FORTALEZA - BOSTON 2017

To be able to leave messages on the wall and post photos in the gallery you need to be logged in. You will receive your personal login details for this community once you have booked the voyage.

Trainees joining us from Cape Town to Boston are in for an adventure of a lifetime. With over two months at sea and 7700 nautical miles, this voyage is for those who seek the real sailing experience. On the way to Boston we will visit both St. Helena Island and Ascension Island, giving trainees the chance to explore these remote Atlantic islands. Due to problems with the airplane landing strip on Ascension Island, we have recently also scheduled a visit to Fortaleza, Brazil, for a small change in trainees and crew. Between these stops, you will learn all there is to know about tall ship sailing and life at sea from experienced crew members, and make friends for life with your watchmates, with whom you'll share sunrises and sunsets, rainy days and starry nights. Let the adventure begin!

gratitude, that is one of the feelings in my soul after disembarking Europa in Boston. From Fortaleza to Boston I lived and worked with a bunch of friend I did not know yet, but became dear to me. The ocean in the vastness of the visible and invisible universe made me humble. The thought of being part all this beauty made my heart sing, just as my harmonica did during the silent hours of dogwatch. Loved every minute of this trip. Thank you all!

With this speed of almost 9 knots it looks like ETA in Fortaleza is easily met. See you in two days!

Dear sailors, the adventure has taken an unexpected turn! As you all know by now, the flights to and from Ascension Island have been cancelled due to a broken landing strip. In order to go forth with our planned trainee and crew change, we have now scheduled another stop in Fortaleza, Brazil. The estimated date of arrival in Fortaleza is May 16th. To all those supposed to join us on Ascension Island, we now instead look forward to seeing you in Brazil!

Mike · 8 months

Hi all! Is it ok if we arrange to meet at the Quay Four pub in the V&A Waterfront on Wednesday at 6:30 - 7pm? I'll get in early and bag a big table for us. Cheers!

Andy · 8 months

So I'm wandering in the city centre & find a bench next to a street market. 2 minutes later a guy sits next to me & I say "Excuse me are you sailing to Boston?" & he say "Yes I am!". Great to bump into you Greg! If it weren't for the orange backpack detail I'd never have asked. ☺️

Paint job not quite done yet

Folks - Sounds like there is a plan to meet at 7 on the 12th at a pub. The question I have is which one? Looks like a number of choices were presented

Andy · 8 months

I was asked by the check in staff why I didn't have a return flight from South Africa. Luckily I had the letter from Europa with me.

Leon · 8 months

LEON Joining at Ascension. I'm looking forward to make this great voyage with you, till then.

Rolf · 8 months

Hi all sailors, I'm arriving in Cape Town already on the 5th and i'm up for a meeting on the 12th too or earlier.

Gus · 8 months

I look forward to meeting and working with you on our sailing trip to Boston. I arrive in Cape Town about noon 12th April and would enjoy getting together for drinks and maybe food that evening. Several years ago I enjoyed Belgium beer and a good meal at the Anker Deb restaurant on the waterfront (see restaurant details below). That’s one possibility but there are many other options in Cape Town. Maybe Mike could suggest a place since he’s local. Would 7:00 pm be a good time to meet? Den Anker http://www.denanker.co.za/ Airy restaurant with harbor side terrace, serving Belgium beers and seafood-orientated dishes. Located in: V&A Waterfront Address: V&A Waterfront, Pierhead, V & A Waterfront, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa

Greg · 8 months

Getting ready! I'm also arriving in Cape Town on the 7th. If you see someone who looks like this, walking around with an orange backpack, say hi! meeting up on the 12th sounds good too!

Alea · 8 months

Also joining at Ascension! I'm not a sailor yet, but I love being out on the water...

Joop · 8 months

I'll be boarding on Ascension, God willing and weather permitting. Can't wait to see you all enjoying the escape from the rat race as someone mentioned.

Hi all, Peter Newcombe, (Newk) from Darwin Australia I too, am excited to be on the voyage I managed to do two trips in 2015 to Antartica and Cape town on the Europa. I am not a sailor by any stretch of the imagination, but I do enjoy the escape from the "rat race" I shall be in Cape town on the evening of the 9th April at the protea waterfront lodge. Looking forward to meeting everyone, Not used to this "Blogging" stuff. This is the first time I have left a message on any social media outside of emailing.

Philip · 8 months

This will be my third tall ship voyage and I'm really looking forward to it.

Andy · 8 months

When is everyone getting into Cape Town. I arrive on the 7th. Fancy meeting up for a drink somewhere on the 12th?

Bark EUROPA · 8 months

Hi all sailors, we are very happy to see some activity here in the community! Just as a very last reminder, for all those of you non-U.S. citizens joining us all the way to Boston, it is crucial that you have arranged your B1/B2 visa for the United States before embarkation in Cape Town. Safe travels to South Africa everyone, we look forward to seeing you on board soon!

Colin and Kevin · 8 months

Hello Shipmates, looking forward to our long swim to Boston together on the finest little ship afloat.

Hi all. Looking forward to meeting everybody! I'm actually based in South Africa, so if anyone has any questions or needs any advice about Cape Town or SA, please drop me a line - I'll be glad to help (if I can!) Cheers!
