It’s time to go home! After some exciting years, full of adventures, EUROPA will be finishing her Antarctica season in the Spring of 2025 in Walvisbay, Namibia. From there, EUROPA will set sail on a voyage up the Atlantic Ocean, finishing in the Netherlands. Embark on the first leg of this crossing, from Namibia to Brazil. This voyage takes you on a true adventure across the South Atlantic, where endless horizons, steady tradewinds will propel us to our destination of Recife.

Embarking in Namibia

Embarking in Namibia is a truly unique experience. Imagine the golden hues of the African sun, the warm, sandy air and the rising temperatures of the desert landscapes.

Bark EUROPA will be ready for you in Walvis Bay, a coastal hub with a local airport offering connections to Namibia's international airport, making your arrival seamless. 

Walvis Bay is also the perfect gateway to explore Namibia's wonders. Arrive a few days early to embark on unforgettable excursions, like visiting Etosha National Park or the Sossusvlei in the southern Namibian Desert. The red sand dunes are a breathtaking spectacle and a must-see before setting sail.

Land in sight! Arriving in Recife after the 31-day ocean crossing from Namibia, will be a moment of triumph! After weeks at sea, learning new skills, making new friends, enjoying the tranquil feel of life on the ocean, the lively streets of Recife will be a striking contrast. The perfect place to reflect together on the unforgettable adventure. 

Wander through the historic old town of Recife, known for its charming streets and colonial architecture, or head to Boa Viagem Beach, a stunning stretch of white sand with turqoise waters. Perhaps you'd like to visit the UNESCO-listed town of Olinda with its colorful houses and cobblestone streets. Loads to explore after you have disembarked from your adventure on board!

Route

Leaving Namibia behind, EUROPA will catch the southeasterly trade winds that dominate this part of the Atlantic. These reliable winds fill the sails and carry the ship westward toward the remote island of St Helena. From St Helena, the journey continues northwest across the open ocean towards Recife. The route is shaped by the rhythms of wind and sea, with days filled by the sound of sails catching the breeze and nights illuminated by Southern hemisphere constellations.

Day 1: Walvis Bay

A very international group of guests will arrive in Walvis Bay, Namibia. It is here where you will start your voyage on the Atlantic. Meet the crew, your fellow travellers and get yourself comfortable on board Bark Europa, the beautiful tallship on which your adventures will begin shortly. Welcome on board!

Day 2 to 13: Goodbye Africa

Bark EUROPA sets sail to our first destinations: St. Helena. On the Atlantic Ocean the voyage crew will be participating in the watch system: standing on look-out, steering the ship and setting sails. It is all part of this ocean voyage!

Day 13 to 15: Visit of St. Helena

We hope to have the chance to visit the very remote island  St. Helena for 1 or 2 days. A historic outpost in the middle of the Atlantic. This volcanic gem offers a fascinating stop, with its rugged beauty, unique wildlife (don't forget to say 'hi' to Jonathan, the world's oldest turtle) and connections to maritime history, including its role as Napoleon's final place of exile.

Day 16-30: Crossing the Southern Atlantic

Further we go, sailing northwest to Recife. We have about 2 more weeks on board, learning the art of sailing and enjoying life at sea. Guests on board are encouraged to participate in the ship's operations. Experienced crew will be there to guide you to leave the ship as full fledged sailor. You can join the scientist in ongoing research projects, collecting samples of ocean micro plastics, or learning more about the ecosystems around us. Get hands-on with ship maintenance, assisting the crew with tasks like varnishing woodwork, splicing ropes or mending sails.

Days on board are a blend of structured activity and serene moments. You'll find time to relax on deck, gaze at the vast ocean or share stories with your fellow adventurers.

Day 31: Arrival in Recife, Brazil

Approaching Recife, the Brazilian coastline reveals itself, such a contract after the solitude of the ocean. after days of hard work, learning, reflection and relaxation, the journey is at its end, rewarding you with a sense of accomplishment and unforgettable memories. After the last night on board, you will waive the ship goodbye the next morning.

Are swimming and snorkeling included in the voyages?

During the Pacific voyages and Ocean crossing, we will have regular swim stops during the voyages, and you are welcome to bring your snorkeling gear to explore the underwater world.

Is sailing experience required?

When you decide to join us one of our voyages, you will be doing so as part of the voyage crew. This means that EUROPA’s permanent crew will train you to be a sailor. No experience is needed, our crew will learn you everything along the way. Everyone is welcome to take the helm, set sails, assist with maneuvers, navigation, weather observations, furling the sails on the yards and much more. The permanent crew will give lectures and instruct you during the voyage in steering, navigation and sail handling. This will be done in a ‘Dutch’ style, so without yelling, blowing whistles or uniforms.

Can I join a sailing voyage as a solo traveler?

Yes! As a solo traveler, you are more than welcome to participate in a sailing trip aboard the EUROPA. Many of our guests are individual adventurers seeking new experiences and the opportunity to form new friendships during the journey. Our crew and fellow passengers create a close-knit community, ensuring that you will quickly feel at home on board. So, when traveling alone, you can definitely enjoy the camaraderie and unique experience of sailing on the EUROPA.

What can I expect regarding the food onboard?

When you're out at sea, our galley is always busy preparing delicious meals to keep everyone well-fed. Our experienced cook and cook’s assistant take care of all meals on board, surprising our voyage crew with a variety of dishes made with local ingredients from the ports we visit. We offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. When you book your voyage, you can choose your meal preference to ensure everything is arranged in advance.
