Hey, mr Bartender

A good bartender isn't just someone who can shake a cocktail container of mixed alcohols behind his back, throw it up and catch it in one hand, then slosh it dramatically from a meter up into your glass without spilling a drop. Oh no.

A good bartender isn't just someone who can shake a cocktail container of mixed alcohols behind his back, throw it up and catch it in one hand, then slosh it dramatically from a meter up into your glass without spilling a drop. Oh no. A good bar tender is someone who can invent a new drink to suit whatever the customer needs, or whatever comes into his imagination.

So we hope you enjoy a couple of drinks available now in Bar Europa. But be aware - these are very limited editions, available only while fast shrinking stocks last.

1. Take a shot of Jameson's, as used to toast one famous Antarctic explorer, and mix with pristine snowmelt water taken from a particular waterfall close to Stromness on south Georgia. Result: a 'whisky and Shackleton' - gives you a shot in the arm at midnight after the evening watch

2. For this you need a good English gin (I suppose it could also be Norwegian, but as far as I know there isn't one), and a tonic, and pour it over rocks hand-hewn by Laura, using a hammer and eye protection. Yes, 'rocks' taken from the glacier that towers above Wild Point, where Shackleton's men sheltered for more than four months. Marvel at the tiny

air bubbles, trapped for a thousand years in those ancient ice chips now doused in Gordon's. It's what we call a 'gin and Elephant'. Particularly popular with Blue Watch ladies in place of tea and biscuits.

What's your Southern 'comfort'?
