This August, you are welcome on board, no reservation required. During open ship hours, you’re invited to wander the decks, take the helm, gaze at the towering rigging, and imagine life at sea. But that’s not all, just steps away is our research station, where sailing meets science.

During SAIL Amsterdam 2025, you’re welcome to explore the decks during open ship hours, stand at the helm, look up at the rigging, and imagine life at sea. Our crew will be there to answer your questions. No need to book, just step aboard. Look out for QR codes along the way to discover De Verhalen van Bark EUROPA, a series of stories tied to the places you're standing.

Research station

On board Bark EUROPA, sailing and science go hand in hand, from studying marine biodiversity and collecting microplastic samples to photographing whale flukes that contribute to global research. In partnership with dedicated scientists and institutions, we support projects that deepen our understanding of the ocean and the life it holds. During SAIL, our research station is open daily, offering a glimpse into this work and inviting you to take part, to learn, observe, and connect with the sea in a different way.

Visiting with Kids?

Find the Cool 7! Seven Antarctic animals are hiding around the ship: the penguin, leopard seal, elephant seal, albatross, krill, orca, and whale. Grab your Cool 7 coloring sheet, roam the deck, and see how many you can find. A perfect adventure for young explorers!

They can also visit the research station on the dock to learn how each whale tail is unique and colour their own fluke, joining our mission to help track whales around the world.

Discover a collection of items normally only available when you're sailing with us. During SAIL Amsterdam, we’re opening the Ship shop to visitors on land! From postcards, pins, patches, and crew beanies to sailor hoodies and t-shirts. Merchandise is available on board during open ship hours only, and stock is limited!

Friends of Bark EUROPA
Friends of Bark EUROPA is a foundation that supports the ship and helps offer sail training to young people who might not otherwise get the chance. Donations contribute to trainee spots and to the ongoing preservation and maintenance of the ship, from restoring traditional details to ensuring she remains seaworthy for future generations.
During SAIL Amsterdam, you’ll find donation points on board. Every contribution helps keep the spirit and craftsmanship of traditional sailing alive.

What are the open ship hours for Bark EUROPA during SAIL?

Visitors can explore the ship on the following days:

Please note: No open ship on Wednesday, 20 August, due to the Sail-in Parade.

Where will Bark EUROPA be located during the event?

She will be moored at the Javakade, right at the heart of the SAIL Amsterdam celebrations. For real-time updates on her exact position, please visit our Follow the Ship page.

Do I need a reservation or ticket to simply walk aboard?

No booking or ticket is required, just step aboard during the designated open ship hours and start exploring!

Are children allowed on board during open ship hours?

Yes! Children are welcome, but must be supervised at all times by an adult.

Is it possible to sail with EUROPA during the event?

No, Bark EUROPA will remain moored at the Javakade throughout the event until the Sail-out.

Can I join the Sail-in or Sail-out on board?

Unfortunately, no. These events are not open for additional guests.

Can I organize a private event on board during SAIL?

No, the ship is fully booked and not available for external event rentals during SAIL Amsterdam.

Is the ship accessible for visitors with limited mobility?

As a historical tall ship, EUROPA has steep stairs and narrow passageways. Accessibility is limited and unfortunately not suitable for all mobility needs.
