Elskarin Klarenbeek - Mate Bark EUROPA

Elskarin is not only a skilled mate, she is also one of our top carpenters!

What inspired you to join the crew of Bark EUROPA, how did you join the crew?

Beautifull sailing ship, international pleasant crew, challenging sailing area Antarctic. I appreciated the atmosphere on board. Good organisation by the office. I sailed as chief mate on board.

What do you do when you are not on the ship?

I am a ship carpenter, sail on other ships (specially ice area's), rebuild my own house, work as a rigger on tall ships. Sail with my own sailing ship. (If not at work, stare through the window and dream about new adventures;)

Could you tell us about a unique destination you've visited on board EUROPA and what made it special?

Antarctica. Challenging circumstances, exploring, amazing wildlife, think/act out of the box.

What's the most memorable moment you've experienced while sailing on Bark EUROPA?

Soooo many, difficult to choose....

Drifting around in a bay full with humpback whales, handing over my watch (I need to go to bed to get some sleep...!), not able to go to bed because it's so beautifull outside. Finally I moved myself into my cabin, brushing my theeth and meanwhile seeing in the mirror still all the humpback whales through the porthole, amazing who will have such an experience...? :))):))))

What is the most important lesson you've learned from your experiences on Bark EUROPA?

Never under estimate the influences around on you.

Keep a good happy atmosphere in the crew, then they can fix everything.
