What inspired you to join the crew of Bark EUROPA, how did you join the crew?
I had the pleasure of meeting an old engineer in Ushuaia who shared amazing stories about the challenges and amazing journeys aboard the Europa. After corresponding with Captain Janke via email, I joined the Europa in Cape Town. The experience was nothing short of expierence as I learned a decent amount of new things and was even able to contribute to the ship. The sense of community and adventure aboard the Europa is something I dearly miss, and I hope to return soon.
What do you do when you are not on the ship?
I lead a nomadic lifestyle as a full-time world traveler, working primarily as a diving instructor. Additionally, I contribute my skills to the Belgium International Disaster Response Team and the EU as an electrical engineer, focusing on setting up field hospitals and implementing water purification systems in response to major natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes.
Could you tell us about a unique destination you've visited on board EUROPA and what made it special?
Antarctica is truly indescribable. Its vast icy landscapes, pristine beauty, and unique wildlife make it an inspiring destination like no other. No amount of words can fully capture the majesty and serenity of this remote continent.
What's the most memorable moment you've experienced while sailing on Bark EUROPA?
One of the standout moments for me was definitely departing from Cape Town and setting. Arriving at remote islands after being at sea for a while also left a lasting impression; the feeling of stepping onto solid ground again is truly amazing. And then there were the challenges in the engine room, each one a test of skill, determination, and teamwork. Working together in the engine room not only showcased our technical abilities but also strengthened our bond as a crew. And what really made the journey special was the strong camaraderie we shared and the unforgettable deck BBQs we enjoyed together with the voyage crew.
What is the most important lesson you've learned from your experiences on Bark EUROPA?
Living without an internet connection is possible!
