Terry van Kampen On board

Known for his approachable manners that instantly makes others feel at home, Terry navigates the ship with confidence and skill, while creating a warm atmosphere on board.

Terry carries a wealth of experience and knowledge as the Chief Mate on the Bark Europa, having joined the crew in 2009. After 2013, he spends his years as landlubber, but in 2023, the longing for a sailor life on the oceans pulled him back on board. His dedication to returning to the sea is evident in his commitment to remaking all his exams to get his maritime paperwork back in order. Now, he’s exactly where he belongs—navigating from the wheelhouse of Bark Europa, guiding the ship with confidence and expertise.

As Chief Mate, Terry is not only responsible for navigation but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the ship's overall safety and functionality. He has a knack for troubleshooting engineering and ICT issues, demonstrating a practical and resourceful approach to the challenges of life at sea. His technical expertise, combined with a thorough understanding of the vessel, makes him a vital asset to the crew.

His passion for exploration is very clear, especially as he prepares for his fifth season in Antarctica this year. A great opening topic to talk about: ask him about scuba diving to spark his enthusiasm!
