As bosun on EUROPA, you hold a key leadership role, responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ship's rigging, sails and deck equipment. The bosun oversees the deck crew, ensuring that all hands work efficiently and safely and involve the voyage crew in the daily activities. This page outlines the duties and responsibilities of our bosun.
Duties and responsibilities
- Takes orders from the Master or Chief Officer and organizes safe sail maneuvering
- Planning, scheduling and assigning work to the deckhands
- Responsible for the mast maintenance
- Teaching skills to deckhands and trainees
- Helps out with safe mooring operations and anchoring
- Preparing and organizing shipyard maintenance programs
- Stock levels of rigging- and maintenance materials
- Part of the Fire fighting team
- Performs cleaning duties and helping out other departments
- Administration tasks
Qualifications and requirements
- Experience on board a square rigged sailing vessel as bosun
- Guest-focused, service-oriented, positive personality and professional appearance
- Preferable background in traditional rigging and sailmaking
- Good leadership skills
- Being able to handle emergencies onboard effectively
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Comfortable living in close quarters with other sailors
Minimum required certificates
- Dutch seamansbook or seamans book recognized by the Dutch authorities
- Valid certificate of competency (rating forming part of a navigational watch).
- Seafarer’s medical certificate
- Basic safety certificate
