Being a captain on board Bark EUROPA is a unique and rewarding challenge, combining traditional seamanship with the responsibilities of leading a historic tall ship on adventurous voyages. Our captain is entrusted with the safety, navigation and overall experience on board. This page details the required duties, skills and qualifications needed to lead EUROPA as captain.
Duties and responsibilities
- Responsible for safe navigating and maneuvering the ship
- Responsible for deck operations, maintenance and general safety on board.
- Maintaining effective communication with the ship's crew, port authorities, other vessels, and shore-based personnel.
- Ensures that the crew members are trained in their respective roles, including firefighting, first aid, and safety procedures.
- Ensures compliance with international and local maritime legislation and regulations.
- Providing leadership, guidance, and support to promote teamwork and maintain a good morale on board.
- Responsible for the welfare of the crew and guests, together with the Chief Officer.
Qualifications and requirements
- Experience as officer on board a square rigged sailing vessel
- Good navigation and leadership skills
- Computer skills such as Microsoft office 365, basic IT/ICT knowledge and general troubleshooting
- Basic engineering knowledge
- Knowledge of safety procedures and maritime regulations
- Being able to handle emergencies onboard effectively
- Fluent in written and spoken English
Minimum required certificates
- Dutch seamansbook or seamans book recognized by the Dutch authorities
- Dutch certificate of competency master sailingships unlimited area
- Seafarer’s medical certificate
- Basic safety certificate
- Medical Care certificate
- GMDSS general operator’s certificate
