Chief mate

As the chief mate on Bark EUROPA, you play an essential role in supporting the captain and leading the crew through the daily operations of a traditional tall ship. Responsible for your own watch, you'll manage deck operations, oversee safety protocols and train the crew. The chief mate ensures smooth sailing on every voyage.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for safe navigating and maneuvering the ship.
  • Coordinate deck operations, maintenance and safety drills.
  • Organizing watch schedules.
  • Responsible of the upkeep of the lifesaving and fire fighting appliances.
  • Ensure compliance with international and local maritime legislation and regulations.
  • Administration tasks like voyage planning, ship documentation and logistics.
  • As Chief Officer you serve as a liaison between the Master and the rest of the crew. 
  • Responsible for the welfare of the crew and guests, together with the Master.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Experience as officer on board a square rigged sailing vessel
  • Good navigation and leadership skills 
  • Computer skills such as Microsoft office 365, basic IT/ICT knowledge and general troubleshooting
  • Guest-focused, service-oriented, positive personality and professional appearance
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and maritime regulations 
  • Being able to handle emergencies onboard effectively 
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Minimum required certificates

  1. Dutch seamansbook or seamans book recognized by the Dutch authorities 
  2. Dutch certificate of competency Chiefmate sailingships unlimited area
  3. A Dutch Certificate of Competence – in charge of a navigational watch on sailing vessels < 500 GT in unlimited trading area
  4. Seafarer’s medical certificate
  5. Basic safety certificate
  6. Medical First Aid or Medical care certificate
  7. PSCRB certificate
  8. Advanced firefighting certificate
