Regitze Andersen is passionate about protecting our oceans and raising awareness about the marine environment. She is part of the research and guide team on Bark Europa, where she shares her knowledge about the ocean with the voyage crew and engages them in research and citizen science activities.
She believes that involving the voyage crew in citizen science is a powerful way to connect them with the oceans while contributing to research projects across the world. By participating in data collection and observation, the voyage crew gain firsthand insight into the state of marine ecosystems, understand the effects of pollution, and experience the impact that careful, collective action can have, especially on a ship like Bark Europa, which sails to remote and often isolated regions where scientific data is particularly valuable.
Regitze first sailed with Europa in 2021, crossing the Atlantic. During that voyage, she conducted a research project on surface ocean plastic pollution, collecting samples with a manta trawl along the way. Since then, she has continued to work as both a guide and researcher on board, including voyages in Antarctica, focusing on wildlife, ocean processes, and engaging the voyage crew in meaningful citizen science projects.
Outside of sailing, Regitze volunteers with Nordic Ocean Watch Denmark, a volunteer environmental organization dedicated to motivating people to care for the ocean through hands-on activities, knowledge sharing, and building a community of ocean watchers. She participates in beach cleanups, collects data on ocean pollution, and helps raise awareness about the marine environment. Her experience with the organization informs how she engages people on board Europa, showing that everyone have an important role in protecting the environment.
