Marretje on board Bark EUROPA

Marretje Adriaanse Researcher

Front of the tall ship Bark Europa

The atmosphere is changing again. I can see it around me, but I also feel it myself.

Packing and moving from the door of my house to my bunk is always a tough process for me. My ADHD takes over and I am basically in permanent stress of what I will lose in the airport this time. I am proud to report I have my passport; I have my bag. I lost my sweater in Namibia
just 10 minutes before getting on board so I almost made it. I am now living in the Europa merch one so in the end it’s fine – and soon the temperatures will rise anyway.

This whole process does always exhaust me and then the first days I wonder why I put myself through this. Wondering if I’m maybe not done travelling and prefer pyjama parties on the couch. The other side is, that I perfectly well know that I can only enjoy so many lazy evenings before I feel unsettled, and playing board games with people here in the deckhouse is a lot more fun. And it’s not like I don’t lose shit at home as well.

One of the very seasick guests also admitted that, lying in his bunk sick, he was already imagining himself on a flight home from Saint Helena, instead of sailing to Amsterdam with us. Within two days he is walking around with a big smile, made friends with the crew by sharing chocolate, and it is hard to imagine that there was ever a moment he
didn’t want to be here. As he, and other crew members have been sharing stories of previous adventures and holidays - I started to feel inspired again.

After hearing stories of baboons in Namibia, snow in Iceland, northern lights in Greenland, festivals in Ireland and the cuisine of Brazil, Ican feel myself getting excited again. I am being reminded of how
beautiful this world is, and how grateful I should be that I am on my
way now exploring some more.

Our eyes are now set on our next stop; Saint Helena. We have been making good speed so it won’t take too long before we get there.
