Embark on a new adventure and enjoy more than three weeks of sailing, exploring and hiking. This voyage will be all about the Chilean Channels, where fjords twist through emerald forests and mountain peaks rise in mist. From Ushuaia to Valparaiso we navigate coastal waterways, hidden coves and glacial landscapes before we start our sailing route up north to Valparaiso along the Chilean Coast.

Leaving Ushuaia behind, the Beagle Channel slowly opens into a world of quiet waterways, only surrounded by mountains. We sail through sheltered passages through the Chilean channels, visit protected fjords, narrow inlets and anchorages surrounded by glaciers. Further north, as the channels widen and we leave the last signs of human presence behind, we gradually enter the open Pacific Chilean coast, where steady winds and the Humboldt current carry us up toward Valparaiso.

Embarkation in Ushuaia

Your voyage begins in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, nestled between the Andes mountains and the Beagle Channel. After boarding Bark EUROPA, you'll settle into your cabin, meet the crew and your fellow voyage crew and attend the first safety briefings. As we cast off, we wave Ushuaia goodbye and set sail towards Puerto Williams to clear into Chile. You'll get your first taste of tall ship life: the safety procedures begin and the crew will teach you the first ropes of EUROPA surrounded by dramatic Patagonian landscapes. From Puerto Williams, we'll set sail through the scenic Chilean Channels.

Disembarkation in Valparaíso

After more than 3 weeks exploring the labyrinth of the Chilean Channels and sailing north along the coast, we'll arrive in the colorful and world heritage city of Valparaíso. As we approach the coast, the landscapes and temperatures shift into vibrant urban life. The city's hills are full of small and colorful houses, connected by endless staircases of historic funicular elevators. We disembark with new skills, unforgettable memories and the unique experience of having sailed through the Chilean Channels to one of the most iconic ports in the Pacific.

Route

As we sail through the Beagle Channel into the remote and sheltered Chilean Channels, we follow the tides and narrow passages, sometimes sailing, sometimes motoring. The maze of fjords, islands and inland waterways bring us to glaciers and rainforests. After days of inland waterways we reach the open Pacific coast, where the ship feels the swell again. Here we join the Humboldt current, a powerful northward flow of cold nutrient rich water. This current brings southerly winds and an abundance of wildlife: whales, dolphins, albatrosses and even penguins. Gradually the wild coastline gives way to signs of human life and warmer skies, until we reach our destination: Valparaíso.

Day 1: Welcome on board

From nearly all corners of the world, our guests will arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina. Your voyage on board EUROPA will finally start. Embarking via our gangway, you will be welcomed by our crew members. You will be asked to sign in on board and take the luggage to your assigned cabin, followed by a first meeting to introduce the captain and crew to the voyage crew. These will be the first exciting moments of your time on board. A first glance of who you will be sharing your experience with. They will be solo travellers, friends or couples, young and old, from various countries and with different backgrounds, all united in their dream of sailing through Chilean Patagonia on a tallship.

Life on board

For some people on board it will be their first time on a tall ship, while others will have done similar journeys. This mix of beginners and more experienced tall ship lovers creates a learning atmosphere on board, where each person can contribute in their own way to keep the ship sailing. On this voyage we alternate the sailing days with hikes in rainforests and alongside icy blue glaciers. Every day, another outlet will have something new in store for us.

On this voyage we navigate one of the world's most untouched and dramatic waterways. This is sailing where few ships can go. Life slows down and you rediscover presence, peace and the joy of simply being. It's rare to find such stillness in today's world. Every day offers a new panorama of snow capped peaks, misty forests and waterfalls. Light dances on the mountains and water, constantly transforming the view.

Wildlife all around

Sailing in the channels is also about experiencing the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. Whales breach close to the ship, curious dolphins come and ride along our zodiacs and penguin colonies dot the coastlines. You may also spot rare bird species along the waters edges and during our hikes ashore. Out at sea, the cold, nutrient rich waters feed immense blooms of plankton that form the foundation of a vibrant food web, attracting many whales.

The power of nature

While sailing through the remote channels, we may even be granted a sighting of the southern elephant seal. Although not as common as in South Georgia or Antarctica, small and slowly recovering groups have begun to recolonize in hidden coves and shores in southern Chile. Their presence is a sign of wilderness at its purest. This is exactly the beauty of the trip: you never know what kind of sightings this area has in store for us.

Unforgettable sunsets

As the days shorten, the sunsets linger, painting the sky in hues of gold, pink and violets. With the stark contrasts of the mountains, forests and its reflections on the water, it's a canvas that only you will experience. Can you imagine, looking at such sceneries from aloft, watching the sun disappear behind the snowcapped peaks? These are moments of quiet reflection of being in awe of the power of nature.

Leaving the Channels behind, now EUROPA truly comes alive: the art of working with the wind and the currents. The rhythm of activities during your watch will change, standing on look out, at the helm and helping with setting and trimming the sails. Now you'll understand what it means to sail a history tall ship the traditional way: seamanship in its purest form.

What a marvellous experience: The ship was incredible and the crew were so helpful for those of us who had never sailed on a square rigger before. It was good to meet new people, there were 13 different nationalities onboard all of whom experienced their own personal adventure. We swam near the equator, saw dolphins, whales, flying fish and albatross and had perfect sailing weather for most of the trip. A small niggle was that a number of our more experienced fellow male voyage crew were a bit over zealous when it came to rope handling or sail setting and maybe the initial briefing could make it clearer about allowing everyone the opportunity to be involved rather than those who mostly pushed themselves forward. I would absolutely recommend Europa to anyone looking for a special experience, I can’t wait to do another trip!

The whole trip was just amazing. From the crew to the food to the ship. It was my second voyage on The Europa and would happily do a third. I would however recommend if I may that perhaps a word to everyone at the beginning of each leg about not taking ropes off or pushing in in front of female crew members. We are there too for the whole experience not just to paint our nails. Every member of the female voyage crew experienced this and some of the crew as well. I did point this out to the Captain who took this on board immediately and spoke to her crew for which I was very thankful.

Sail the Chilean Channels to Valparaíso

Embark on an unforgettable journey as Bark EUROPA navigates through the remote Chilean Channels. This voyage will bring you towering fjords, endless vista's with rugged mountains with snow capped peaks, guided hikes ashore and a chance to learn traditional seamanship as we sail onwards to Valparaíso. With quiet anchorages, breathtaking scenery and the Pacific southerly winds to look forward to, this voyage has a balance of adventure, discovery and pure sailing.

The voyage will run from Ushuaia to Valparaíso, but there is an option to disembark earlier in Puerto Montt if that better suits your schedule. Disembarkation in Puerto Montt would be on April 8th. In that case the voyage fee would be € 4840 p.p. in a 4/5 berth cabin and € 5830 p.p. in a 2 berth cabin.

Can I join a sailing voyage as a solo traveler?

Yes! As a solo traveler, you are more than welcome to participate in a sailing trip aboard the EUROPA. Many of our guests are individual adventurers seeking new experiences and the opportunity to form new friendships during the journey. Our crew and fellow passengers create a close-knit community, ensuring that you will quickly feel at home on board. So, when traveling alone, you can definitely enjoy the camaraderie and unique experience of sailing on the EUROPA.

What if I get seasick while on the ocean?

It sometimes happens that people experience seasickness while sailing. Fortunately, there are many simple solutions available nowadays that can provide significant relief. Additionally, we have a doctor on board who is always ready to assist you.

Are the listed prices for the entire cabin or just a bunk?

The prices listed on our website are per person for a single bunk. You have the option to book a bunk in a 4/6-person cabin or a two-person cabin. Please note that the two-person cabin can only be booked when traveling with a companion. The prices mentioned are also per person.

What does an optional reservation entail?

If you are interested in a specific voyage and you cannot decide immediately or if you have to make any necessary arrangements we can block a bunk for you for two weeks. That way you will have some time to decide without the risk of losing your berth. Please let us know in which voyage you are interested and how many bunks (male or female) you would like to block and if you prefer a 2-person cabin (can only be booked by couples or duo’s) or a bunk in a 4/6-person cabin. We will contact you as soon as possible to confirm your optional reservation.
