Marretje on board Bark EUROPA

Marretje Adriaanse joined Bark EUROPA after feeling an undeniable pull to be part of the crew. With a background in marine biology, having worked as an aquarist in Rotterdam Zoo, she brings a deep love for marine life to her voyages. Marretje is passionate about exploring new destinations, from Easter Island to the vibrant waters of South Africa. Her time on EUROPA has taught her the power of teamwork, the importance of mindfulness, and the impact of our actions on the environment and each other.

What inspired you to join the crew of Bark EUROPA?
When I first heard about the Europa, it was like something clicked inside me, and I knew right then that I wanted to be a part of it. It was more of a gut feeling than a logical decision because, at that time, I had a job that I absolutely loved, and I wasn't planning on making any big changes in my life. But I was so convinced that this was where I was meant to be that I scheduled a medical seafarer’s check the same day, weeks before I even knew I could actually join the crew. And then before I knew it, I was part of the crew!

What do you do when you are not on the ship?
I was working at Diergaarde Blijdorp (the Zoo of Rotterdam) as an aquarist in the oceanic department. It was such an incredible experience! I got to learn about and take care of over 1000 species (!) of fish, sharks, corals, jellyfish, turtles, and so much more. It was incredible to witness the inner workings of a large aquarium. Now, I'm hoping that during my trips with the Europa, I'll get the chance to encounter some of these species in the wild!

Could you tell us about a unique destination you've visited on board EUROPA and what made it special?
I'm currently on my way to Easter Island and French Polynesia, two destinations I've always dreamed of visiting but never thought I'd actually get the chance to see. Every place I've visited so far has left a lasting impression. From spotting penguins in Puerto Madryn to diving with seals in South Africa and encountering the world's oldest documented land animal in Saint Helena. After every trip, I come home with a new unforgettable memory.

What's the most memorable moment you've experienced while sailing on Bark EUROPA?
Picking a single special memory is tough since there've been so many amazing moments. But when I think back, what really sticks with me is the feeling of sitting on deck, soaking in the last rays of the day, and marveling at the sky's crazy colors I never thought possible. Out at sea, unplugged from phones, I can truly be present in the moment - with the people I'm with, the ocean, and the elements. Discovering that kind of peace is truly unique and hard to encounter elsewhere.

What is the most important lesson you've learned from your experiences on Bark EUROPA?
Firstly, I've come to realize that I'm capable of much more than I initially think. Secondly, aboard the ship, we witness firsthand the impact of our actions on one another. During my research on board, the haunting presence of plastic in the ocean serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of our choices. However, we also have the power to positively influence each other. Sharing moments of joy creates a ripple effect of positivity, shaping an uplifting atmosphere among us. Similarly, in times of sadness, fellow sailors can sense it and offer their support, lending a helping hand when needed. At sea, I feel deeply connected not only to nature but also to the individuals who share this journey with me. It motivates me to contribute positively to the world, even if it's just through sharing my enthusiasm for anything I'm excited about.
