South Georgia - Philipp Reindhard

For our last landing spot we moved the anchorage towards Beaufoy Cove, to visit a big king penguin colony. There was a lot of wind though, and the ship was rocking with the waves. The scouting zodiac turned back due to the heavy sea.

No landing was possible in these conditions. I sat alone on the bench at the helm to listen to the melody of the king penguins and to say good bye to them from afar. Apart from the sound of the waves and wind and the constant cries of the penguins it was very quiet on the ship. Sometimes, swimming king and gentoo penguins came close to the boat. Some cormorants flew over our ship. In the distance, the glaciers and mountains appeared and vanished in the clouds. I slowly fell asleep.

We stayed at this anchorage over night. Early morning we set sail towards north. On the lookout I could observe the coastline slowly vanish behind a thick mist. And the few jumping gentoos around became rarer and rarer to see. We got a lot to see and experience during our landings in the last week. I am glad for the coming days at sea to process and think back at our time at South Georgia, before new adventures await us hopefully in Tristan da Cunha.
