On this voyage, you'll sail through one of the richest marine regions on Earth! Between the Chilean port of Valparaíso and the Peruvian port of Callao, the Humboldt Current breathes life into the Pacific, creating rich waters, alive with movement and magnificent wildlife.

Your adventure begins in the historic port of Valparaíso, Chile’s colorful gateway to the Pacific. Valparaíso is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous for its steep hills, colorful houses and labyrinth of funiculars. 

When it's time for embarkation, look for 3 masts and the Europa flag on top to find our ship. The crew will welcome you on board, guiding you through the first steps of life at sea. After settling into your cabin, you'll join the rest of the voyage crew for an introduction of the ship, safety procedures and the voyage ahead of us. The adventure begins!

The voyage comes to an end in Callao, Peru’s historic port. Founded in 1537, Callao has long been the heart of Peru's maritime trade and culture, with its historic fort Real Felipe, standing guard over the harbor. 

Together we’ve shared ocean sunsets, starry nights, and the laughter of new friends made along the way. With hearts full and horizons widened, it’s time to say goodbye to your fellow voyage crew and to Bark EUROPA. This is not farewell, only until the next voyage.

Between Valparaíso, Chile, and Callao, Peru, the cold, life-giving Humboldt Current transforms the Pacific into a realm of astonishing biodiversity. We might see dolphins ride the bow wave, sea lions, pelicans, and maybe turtles. Beneath the surface, vast schools of fish and the powerful Humboldt squid move through the nutrient-rich waters, sustaining one of the planet’s most productive marine ecosystems. Every nautical mile offers a new encounter with wild beauty and the rhythm of the open sea.

Day 1: Welcome on board

From nearly all corners of the world, our guests will arrive in Valparaíso. Your Pacific voyage will finally start. Embarking via our gangway, you will be welcomed by our crew members. You will be asked to sign in on board and take the luggage to your assigned cabin, followed by a first meeting to introduce the captain and crew to the voyage crew before enjoying your first meal on board. These will be the first exciting moments of your time on board. A first glance of who you will be sharing your experience with. They will be solo travellers, friends or couples, young and old, from various countries and with different backgrounds, all united in their dream of sailing the Pacific on a tallship.

Life on board

For some people on board it will be their first time on a tall ship, while others will have done similar journeys. This mix of beginners and more experienced tall ship lovers creates a learning atmosphere on board, where each person can contribute in their own way to keep the ship sailing. Soon after we have cast of our mooring lines, the watch schedule will begin. You will be placed in the Red - White or Blue watch. Each watch will take turns in being 4 hours on watch, to stand on lookout, steer the ship and help with sail handling.

This ocean voyage offers you a chance to get a first glance of the theory and practice of tall ship sailing and all that it entails - sail handling, rigging, maintenance, navigation and much more. From day one, our experience permanent crew will start to teach you all there is to know about square rig sailing. We'll have time to dive a little deeper into the first basics of sailing a square rigger.

During longer ocean voyages, the ocean may sometimes appear as a vast empty space. Ten minutes of trawling show otherwise, revealing a world on its own, full of life and movement beneath the surface. On board, we take the time to explore that world together, contributing to ongoing research and deepening our understanding of the oceans we sail.

Disembarkation: Arrival in Callao

After more than two weeks at sea, we will arrive in Peru, marking the end of our voyage. The last night of the voyage we will spend in port, commemorating everything you have learned throughout the trip, having created memories for a lifetime and making new friends along the way. The morning after, it will be time to say goodbye to the ship, her crew and your newfound friends. On to new adventures!

Everything about being on the Europa is just pure bliss to me; the crew were very nice and welcoming, the deckhands were very patient with us newbies, I haven't been this happy for a very long time. There are a couple of things that can be done better though: 1) Better communications between the permanent and voyage crew (e.g. room change arrangements) 2) Get more and/or better fishing gear with lectures on how to fish 3) Get better squeegees for deck wash! Other than that, coming on the Europa for 2.5 months was the best decision I've ever made.

The whole trip was just amazing. From the crew to the food to the ship. It was my second voyage on The Europa and would happily do a third. I would however recommend if I may that perhaps a word to everyone at the beginning of each leg about not taking ropes off or pushing in in front of female crew members. We are there too for the whole experience not just to paint our nails. Every member of the female voyage crew experienced this and some of the crew as well. I did point this out to the Captain who took this on board immediately and spoke to her crew for which I was very thankful.

What a beautiful and exciting sailing experience on my trip with Bark Europa to Cascais! We had all types of weather, including a storm on the Atlantic Ocean. The Europa is a steady and safe ship with a very experienced and dedicated crew. It is so nice to be part of the sailing crew and be able to help with sailing the ship. For me it was the first time to sail non stop to Cascais on the Europa and it was an indescribable experience and worth repeating.

FAQ

Is sailing experience required?

When you decide to join us one of our voyages, you will be doing so as part of the voyage crew. This means that EUROPA’s permanent crew will train you to be a sailor. No experience is needed, our crew will learn you everything along the way. Everyone is welcome to take the helm, set sails, assist with maneuvers, navigation, weather observations, furling the sails on the yards and much more. The permanent crew will give lectures and instruct you during the voyage in steering, navigation and sail handling. This will be done in a ‘Dutch’ style, so without yelling, blowing whistles or uniforms.

What does an optional reservation entail?

If you are interested in a specific voyage and you cannot decide immediately or if you have to make any necessary arrangements we can block a bunk for you for two weeks. That way you will have some time to decide without the risk of losing your berth. Please let us know in which voyage you are interested and how many bunks (male or female) you would like to block and if you prefer a 2-person cabin (can only be booked by couples or duo’s) or a bunk in a 4/6-person cabin. We will contact you as soon as possible to confirm your optional reservation.

 

I’m over 35, can I still qualify for the youth fare?

The youth fare is reserved for sailors up to 35 and is intended to make it more accessible for younger people to experience life on board.

For this voyage, all other berths are offered at the standard rate, as listed above.

Are there any last-minute discounts available for this voyage?

The pricing for this voyage already takes into account the last-minute nature of the departure and offers a unique opportunity to come on board.

For this reason, no additional discounts are available.

How can I make a booking?

You are welcome to send in your booking form via our website as soon as you are ready for the adventure! Choose your voyage in the sailing schedule, scroll down to the date you wish to sail with us and click the 'Book now' button. You adventure is just a view clicks away!

What can I expect regarding the food onboard?

When you're out at sea, our galley is always busy preparing delicious meals to keep everyone well-fed. Our experienced cook and cook’s assistant take care of all meals on board, surprising our voyage crew with a variety of dishes made with local ingredients from the ports we visit. We offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. When you book your voyage, you can choose your meal preference to ensure everything is arranged in advance. In what sort of cabin will I sleep?

Bark EUROPA has 4/6 persons cabins and 2 persons cabins for the voyage crew. If you join us with a travel partner, you can choose for a 2 persons cabin or to be placed in a 4/6 persons shared cabin. As a solo traveler you will be placed in a 4/6 persons male or female cabin.
Every cabin has his own bathroom with shower and toilet.

Can I join as a volunteer or in exchange for work?

We really appreciate your enthusiasm for sailing with Bark EUROPA.

At this time, we don’t offer volunteer or work-exchange positions on any of our voyages. All berths are offered at the voyage fees as listed on our website.
