Gathering on deck or sheltering from the rain in our deckhouse, is how the day starts. Early morning coffee in hand, the daily works are designated and crew in no time crawls into the depths of the Europa, while others are busy out on deck or in the canvas tent pitched next to the ship, where the carpentry work happens. There’s already no lack of jobs to do, some easier than others. But the more you take the time to have a good look around, an always rising number of repairs appear, both below decks and outside if the weather allow for rust busting, grinding and painting there. No doubt the largest undertaking for now is checking and replacing some of the seawater piping in the engine room. Seemingly unreachable tube sections and jammed bolts are the usual conversation with the ones involved in such arduous task. Meanwhile another team is in charge of taking apart the whole of the dry-storage area, leaving behind them the bare hull, ready for a deep clean-up, new layers of paint and a full refurbish. Tough mission too, as its shelves were built to last. They actually have been solidly holding our supplies for well over two decades, putting up with whatever seas and weather conditions the ship has endured all over the World Oceans. All big or small duties; challenging, strenuous or easy maintenance and repair projects, all together carried out by a crew with the hope of seeing the Europa sailing in a near future, longing for once more pulling on her halyards, braces and sheets, setting sail for new adventures to come.Jordi
